I hope you all had a fabulous time over the Christmas break. I had a lovely time with the family, making merry and relaxing. 2023 looks like it’s shaping up to be an epic year, so it was nice to recharge the batteries and just chill.
It would be very remiss of me to not point out Rob Hardy’s most excellent post over at Ungated. He sums up an awful lot of what I’ve been waffling on about these past few weeks and offers some interesting insights I’d not really considered.
I seem to have been mirroring Rob for some time now. His life has gone in quite a similar way to mine in recent years, plus he and I seem to share very similar interests. I suppose, then, that it’s no coincidence that we’ve started noticing the same issues and looking in similar places for answers. Having worked for many years in and around marketing, I find Rob’s non-coercive marketing ideas particularly fascinating.
With his manifesto, I think Rob’s spot on with his analysis of the core issues: mimesis, a drive to mediocrity, and a general malaise and culture of negativity, in no small part driven by various aspects of the Internet in recent years.
I’m still thinking the COAL attitudes are a great antidote to many, if not all, of the things Rob discusses, so they’ll be something I’ll be focussing on a lot in 2023 – once the short film is shot, of course. In the meantime, please do read his manifesto and sign up to his Substack (although I suspect I may be preaching somewhat to the choir, here).
